The attractional church works off a basic principle which was also in the movie “The Field of Dreams. The principle is this: “If we build it they will come.” I might add that we have some variations of this theme such as:
“If we program it, they will attend it”
“If it worked fifty years ago it should work now.”
“If it isn't working now do it a whole lot more because it always worked before”
We often work from the past. We expect things that worked in the past to work now. The reality is that yes they did work in the past when church was the center of society but times have changed. Our attractional model is not working. How many programs do we put together in hopes that people will show up. How many times do we mourn the fact that no one showed up or few people showed up. Then of course we figure it was their fault for not showing up because we did everything right (ie like we always have done). But all of this involves one common thread. We put together a program and we expected people to come and see it. This is why this model is called attractional. This still has some uses today. I am not discounting it. But it is dependent on people coming to the building. But what is needed is to go out of the building. To go where the people are. Thus the need for the Missional church.
