What is a missional church? What does it mean to be missional?
Missional really means to be like Christ and to be an ambassador for Him. We are to do that not just in church but everywhere we go. Being missional involves breaking out of our old mind-set and ways of thinking and seeking to move with God as he directs us. Our old mindset is to create programs at church in the hopes that we will attract people to church (an attractional model). The new mindset is to go where the people are (a missional model) and to understand culturally their way of thinking so that you can better relate the gospel to them. I am not talking instant evangelism here but rather genuine concern and friendship. Paul alludes to this missional model when he states: I have become all things to all men that I might save some (I Cor 9:22).
Any change of model requires a change of thinking. This is a challenge in and of itself. As I explore this model with you please realize that I am not pushing for an either/or model. In other words, I am not saying that we must completely discard what we have now. I am presenting a model in addition to what we already have. There are some people that will always need the attractional model of church as a spiritual anchor. However the attractional model in and of itself is not the best equipped for reaching out into our communities. Thus we will explore the missional model.
Much of this website is devoted to reaching out to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons. This is not to say that these folks are not Christian. I dialog with gay and lesbian Christians on line every day. They can be Christians just as much as people of different race or nationality can be Christians. So my reaching out to those who are lgbt is one part of Christ’s call to reach out to all peoples.
Some may ask: Why reach out to other people groups? Why reach out to the lgbt community?
The answer is the gospel. We are called to go into all the world and be a witness for Christ, making disciples everywhere we go.
